funny tattoos - Unconvincing Article is Unconvincing

I have nothing against tattoos myself. Just bad ones. All those butterfly tramp stamps, misspelled inspirational quotes, and poorly drawn phallic cartoons give tattoo fanatics a less than stellar reputation. But for every tramp stamp there’s a tattoo out there that can definitively be called “art.”

Discuss amongst yourselves…

  1. Czernobog says:

I’ve read this argument before, it hasn’t gotten any less stupid. interacting with her small minded and sexist views at all is beneath me.

I didn’t want to be the one to mention her looks but… For the life of me, she looks like she put on a Groucho Marx mask that she tore the mustache off of. The more I stare at it the less I’m sure that she hasn’t.

  2. Don'tTatMeBro says:

…and yet there are people out there who are as equally visually-oriented as folks who love ink, who feel that any tattoo takes away from the clean, natural line presented by the Human body. Matters of personal taste are seldom stupid in and of themselves; they are, by their very nature, matters which are viewed differently by each individual – and every individual should be given at the very least our tolerance for – if not our outright support of – their right to that opinion. My personal opinion only, of course.

    • Yippee says:

I am 100% in favour of tolerance of other people’s opinion and I have greatly appreciate people who show the same curtesy. I mostly get irked when someone tries the impose a standardised view in a patronizing way using a ‘the only thing that matters is how attractive men find you’ argument. We all know they exist, hey, they quite often even show up here. I respect everyone’s right to an opinion, the author’s right to impose her opinion on others as a judgment of character? No way.

      • Pinwheel says:

I look at it as people all alter their looks, it’s just varying degrees. Almost everyone cuts their hair. That’s altering your look. Coloring your hair to cover gray or to give highlights. Altering. Makeup? Altering. Extensions, wigs, toupees, headbands, jewelry, body shaping undergarments all alter the way you present yourself to the world.

Tattoos are in the same vein. It’s altering your look, how you see yourself, and how you want others to see you. If I’m allowed to color/cut my hair and wear certain things in order to alter my look, then people who get tattoos should be given the same ability without the risk of being characterized as something less than others.

  3. Canaduck says:

Why is this even posted? The author has some serious issues with internalized misogyny and she’s a snob even without her dumb sexist arguments. I’m trying to roll with the new management here but please, can’t we just stick to actual tattoos?

    • Czernobog says:

As long as this sort of thing is showing up in addition to the our usual fare without cutting into it, I don’t see much to complain about.

It’s not funny and it’s too stupid to discuss, but there’s nothing stopping us from just skipping it.

    • nickcburger says:

There were 6 tattoos posted today. 6.

      • Thistle Dew says:

Just wondering JackNick, were you briefed about the mire you were getting yourself into? Or did Jessica just toss you the keys as she sped away? :)

      • Canaduck says:

Sorry, nick, I know you’re dealing with a lot of backlash here and it’s got to be a colossal pain, considering I’m sure that you’re trying your best (and mostly succeeding!) This article just irritates me.

      • Waaa says:

don’t lose any sleep over it, dude.

        • Anna Rexia says:

Hear, hear. I’m sure a fair number of us expect this time of transition to be challenging. Most of use loved Jessica’s commentaries. Nick isn’t her and never will be. Well, okay, but we won’t go there, mmkay? Give the dude a chance. Six new tattoos in one day? Shït, that’s a lot to check out and see what others are saying about.

Let us also not forget that this site changed considerably a while back. No more “dirty” tattoos and no more “adult” language. In spite of people coming together against those changes by posting on the blog site, we never even got as much as a “fück you,” from anyone in regard to why or who was in charge of those changes/decisions.

It’s the people who visit the site, eg, the regulars, that help make it what it is. If there’s no commentary traffic, it says a lot about the popularity of the site itself. Think about it: the most traffic this site has had in the past few years is when people got pissed off about things. First, it was the Juggalosers and then the hyper-sensitive few who got butthurt over a thumbnail from this site showing up on the ones where the regulars constantly type in “cat speak.” The irony for the latter is, they caused more hits for this site, which brings in more ad revenue for it and the overall Cheezburger network.

          • Czernobog says:

Is that how the site got hamstrung? I never realized. That’s so depressing.

            • Anna Rexia says:

And it now appears to me that this is exactly what they now are aiming for – yet another stupid, passé site with content aimed solely at getting page hits. When you get that kind of tunnel vision, you lose sight of The Big Picture. You think that The Big Picture is the bottom line (money, money, money), but it’s not. Focus solely on the money, you lose your soul, and, eventually, everything else.

    • Czernobog says:

I think Nick is starting to want the same thing.

    • Skippy says:

The site is better without her, imo. What did she post, 3 or 4 tats at the most per day? Her little quips weren’t really funny either. Besides, do you really have nothing better to do than to pour over the new guys work, scrutinizing every single thing that gets posted? Besides, if the mighty Jessica felt the same way about her ‘fans’ she wouldn’t have left.

      • Don'tTatMeBro says:

“Besides, do you really have nothing better to do than to pour over the new guys work….”

There is only one “new guy.” There are no “new guys.” Either way, your want of any apostrophe, either before or after the “s” declares that you’re unfamiliar with possessives, so we’ll presume you haven’t reached the third grade yet.
        .
As to “pouring over” the “new guys” – what would you suggest that we pour over them? Ketchup? Maple syrup? The idiom you’re grasping at is, “pore over.” Now, I’m not saying that your faultlessly clear lack of wit, intelligence, common sense, education or cohesive thought makes your comment any the less important. Oh, wait – that’s precisely what I’m saying, isn’t it? Well then let me add this: get yourself into some remedial English classes before it’s too late. Don’t sit there gawking at the screen – off with you. “Too late” will reach you in a matter of minutes.

        • Czernobog says:

This is a troll. You just made his day.

          • Don'tTatMeBro says:

Couldn’t just applaud the ‘ketchup or maple syrup’ comment and leave the rest alone, could ya? ;) Troll or not, no one who speaks in such a tone about Jess without a riposte – especially given that she’s not here to act in her own defence.

        • essiesmom says:

“There is only one “new guy.” There are no “new guys.” Either way, your want of any apostrophe, either before or after the “s” declares that you’re unfamiliar with possessives, so we’ll presume you haven’t reached the third grade yet.”

DTMB – this is not helpful. You should have referred him to the tat where there was an excess of ‘postrophes, so he could borrow one. Or two. Or three. Have some jam. This is kotata – my favorite! (Save some for the others, please.)
          :)

        • Skippy says:

Wow, you really got me ‘bro’.

Please someone help me, the guy that spent most of his teenage years jerking off to Saved by the Bell reruns and getting his head shoved in the toilet by the school jock just insulted me!!! On the internet, no less!

I only hope I can find the strength to carry on…

        • Somechick03862 says:

          Will you marry me?! *sigh*

      • Thistle Dew says:

“If the mighty Jessica felt the same way about her ‘fans’ she wouldn’t have left.” Don’t say that, you b@st@rd! Jessica didn’t want to leave us….she got a great job making millions, or is fulfilling her life-long circus dreams, or she left to be the Princess of Monaco or something equally thrilling I’m sure…right? sob sob sob.

        • Anna Rexia says:

Maybe she saw the light and was tired of having to be a mere puppet, not a true “manager” and bailed before things really got bad. Jessica is too smart to put up with that crap.

  4. Fad_Monger says:

Why did they use a picture of Sonny Moore to discourage woman from getting tattoos? He’s covered in tattoos.

    • Gaston says:

He’s not “Sonny Moore” anymore. He’s reinvented himself. You will call him “Skrillex”, and you will enjoy it!

  5. jsd says:

    I’m definitely not convinced.

  6. Gaston says:

I think she’s talking about people who look like this (no nudity, possibly NSFW). I also think she’s being a bit pessimistic…

  7. patches o'houlihan says:

she maybe hold the world’s biggest nose

  8. Zach says:

I go to University at Buffalo (The Spectrum is our school newspaper.) The shizstorm she’s receiving in response to this article is amazing.

  9. essiesmom says:

    Re: DIscuss

Sorry. Too old, too busy, too tired to do homework.

Give me an “F” for the assignment. I’ll be in the back of the class sleeping.

  10. Jester_48 says:

reading the full article I get the impression this is payback, as in her boy/girl-friend left her for a girl with tattoos

  11. abadseed says:

that tattoo is really lame. and kinda wordy. but, they did a really good job with the girl’s face!

  12. Don'tTatMeBro says:

    ^^^
    Win.

  13. Dogodame says:

Keep your opinions off my body.

“Nothing comes out of getting a tattoo”? Not all of us are immature idiots, who get their tattoos to shock the world. I am a medical professional, with a college degree. You cannot see my tattoos, but they each represent a particular time in my life, or a major event, and were chosen with care and artistry in mind. They do not define me, but they are part of me, and always will be.

If I choose to decorate my body this way, who are you to be derisive about it? Perhaps I choose to view it as my personalization of god’s “gift” instead.

    • Kemanorel says:

I feel the same way. I have 3 fairly substantial tattoos, but no one can see them unless I choose to show them.

They simply fit me. I’m sure I’m not the only one here who, after getting a tattoo, feels like it’s “right” and should have always be there.

    • idisa says:

I know a girl who has a tattoo. They are six dots on her back that doctors need to line up certain lasers exactly in the same spot every time she has a treatment. Or something to that effect.

Certainly, nothing good can come out of tattoos.

  14. sniggles says:

“But for every tramp stamp there’s a tattoo out there that can definitively be called ‘art.’”

Is that even a sentence? Regardless, I have to believe the ratio is likely closer to 1:15 than 1:1.

    Ferrari? no. Hyundai? perhaps.

  15. Shark says:

Huh. I had no idea manicures were considered “classy”. Most of the acrylic nightmares I see on the hands of my peers are trashy – day-glo colors, tacky designs, glitter, etc. Yeah, they can always get them removed and go au naturale, but fake nails are a ‘trend’ that isn’t stopping anytime soon.

Girl needs to step down from her pedestal. That thin air is affecting her brain.

  16. Homer says:

Guys and gals, long time lurker here. You’re all taking this management change far too seriously. It’s an ugly tattoo site!

  17. April says:

This sadly reminded me of one time years ago when this otherwise nice woman I knew at school saw one of my tattoos and said, “You don’t look like someone who would have tattoos.” She said it as if it were a compliment and I just looked at her, because I was just so offended but shocked into silence. Now, I am sadly used to people saying outrageously offensive things, thinking they are giving you a compliment. I live in the South… I think that explains it all… lol

    • April says:

I just hate that this author is spreading that sort of prejudice that all people with tattoos are some sort of scum of the earth heathens or something…

      • Jill says:

I think the only generality one can make about people who have tattoos is that they have tattoos.

“You don’t look like someone who would have tattoos.” only means that the speaker hadn’t imagination enough to consider that folks with tattoos are as diverse as folks without them.

  18. Robbie says:

“[Women] hold the world’s beauty…. Women hold the world’s class and elegance in their hands.” Gaah. I think the only other time I read something like that, it was in a magazine from 1890.

  19. yolanda says:

I’ve seen some really elegant and classy tattoos. Anything and everything can be overdone or badly done and that is no reason to toss it all out.
I have tattoos, they get compliments, I like them. My husband likes them. My beauty belongs to me and my husband. It’s ours to manage or enjoy as we please and it’s nobody else’s concern whether I have it, keep it, ruin it or lack it. The very idea that someone else should feel entitled to it on any terms, let alone her own? It is infuriating. I’ll pierce what I like, paint what I like, and chop off or add to my body as I please and am able.

    • oost says:

Well said. Tattoos and piercings are done for you, not the people around you. The instant that changes, sh!t hits the fan.

  20. Aylsa says:

For my 18th birthday, my mom took me to get a tattoo. It was something she and I and my best friend went to do together. It’s a small tattoo, just a literal visual representation of my name (a treble clef and the Chinese symbol for exuberant joy), on my shoulder, but I love it. When the tattooer tried to talk me out of doing it on my shoulder, because I might not want it to show later, I asked “are you kidding me?”. It’s small, it’s discreet, it’s classy in a way that all those tattoos that say “classy” aren’t. And I will always remember my mom sitting in front of me, my best friend sitting beside me holding my hand. If that’s not the best birthday present ever, I don’t know what is.

    • Jess says:

Same for me…my mom took me to get my first when I was 21, and I got mine in the same place as hers. When my best friend turned 20, I took her to get her first tattoo. I like that there is a loving tradition behind these tattoos, and I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.

  21. Jed Dye says:

This article is really sexist. The world is made of MEN and WOMEN. Not one sex holds all the world’s ANYTHING, including beauty. And men are not just drooling idiots slobbering after attractive women.
I won’t make any comments on whether this girl is pretty or not. It’s irrelevant. She’s ugly on the inside because she’s a prejudiced snob.
You know, it’s been shown that men are more visual creatures than women. That’s all. But, I believe there’s a saying: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” A man can find tattoos just as attractive on one woman as another man might really find brunettes attractive. It’s subjective and this woman suggesting that HER idea of beauty is EVERY man’s idea of beauty is shallow and short-sighted. Besides, once you get to know the person, a lot of the physical attraction transforms into attraction to the whole person. That’s what really matters.

    • Canaduck says:

Actually, more and more studies are coming out which show that when it comes to sexual interest, women are exactly as visual as men are. The concept that things are otherwise is another one of those fun examples of sexual essentialism that screws us all over to varying degrees, regardless of our gender.

    • Jill says:

“once you get to know the person, a lot of the physical attraction transforms into attraction to the whole person”

What you just said explains the fact that most of us got to be born, even that, fortunately, our ancestors got to be born.

Beyond skin’s attractiveness, deeper attraction grows from the myriad little things that are said from the blink of the eye or a smile at exactly the right time. Can’t define that stuff, each couple has its own way.

  22. Rebeckahhh says:

maybe the people we’ve been gawking at and laughing at all these years on this site would feel that WE are as snobby and judgmental as this girl is to you who have “meaningful tattoos that you have the right to have”… we judge the people on this site as tasteless and sad, etc. (which, yep, they are).. But the girl who wrote that article is just doing the same thing we’re “guilty” of. I’m sure these people with really crappy tattoos think their ink is great and that we just “don’t understand” them. Our tattoos look to her as the UT ones look to us.

  23. thin man says:

    I agree with her 100%,

  24. AnonyMouse says:

    Skrillex?

  25. Rubble says:

‘But for every tramp stamp there’s a tattoo out there that can definitively be called “art”.’
I think your numbers are a bit skewed, it’s more like one piece of genuine art for every hundred thousand tramp stamp/tribal design tattoos.

  26. MuftyTufty says:

I myself do not have any tattoos but not because I don’t like them or think they look horrible, I have just never felt the need for one yet & wouldn’t get a tattoo just for the sake of it! I do not see anything wrong with tattoos. It wouldn’t matter if 2 out of every 3 people had tattoos, all that means is 2 out of every 3 people felt they needed to have a tattoo for their own reasons. The only women who get a tattoo to look beautiful are the women who get eyeliner or lip liner etc tattooed on, everybody else gets a tattoo because they felt the need to for whatever reason, it has got nothing to do with ANYONE else!

I bet when this women goes out for a night out or on a date, I bet she puts make up on, styles her hair (using product), perhaps wears sexy underwear (especially if it’s a date) wears a nice dress to accentuate her figure, a nice pair of heels (which show off her legs) & a spray of perfume to smell nice) all to make her look ‘beautiful’! If this women took her own advice surely she’d go out in an old sack tied with string (but only so it wouldn’t fall off… not to show her waist) with no make-up, her hair undone & just a pair of wellies on that way she knows the guy is with her for HER? I’m willing to bet that when she goes out it’s in the former attire, not the latter.

I’ll tell you what is unattractive lady & that’s bigotry & ignorance & in this day & age there is never an excuse fore ignorance.

  27. robbie says:

At least if there is an excuse, you haven’t heard of it yet.

  28. ertdfg says:

    My thought on tattoos?

Church’s argument (the blue guy) convinced me; although that might just be me falling for a list of bullet points.

  29. FACE says:

The poll is split nearly halfway now, with just a few hundred more people saying no.

  30. Billie Jean says:

I have several tattoos (including a full sleeve) and I am intelligent, polite, and very classy.

What really bothers me with women nowadays, is that they associate class, power, and self-respect with physical attractiveness and general appearance. It’s about a lot more than just what you look like.

  31. danger_dave32 says:

The difference between people that have a tattoo and people that don’t, is that people with a tattoo don’t care if you have one or not.
