They Call Him Flipper

They Call Him Flipper

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. And when life hands you a gnarled stump where your arm was supposed to be, well, at least people will probably stop handing you lemons all the damn time. Make your own lemonade, jerks. He’s got a dolphin for an arm.

  1. Biogal says:

Best tattoo ever. This is a great scar cover.

  2. whiteeepearl says:

At first I thought “what a disgusting body modification”. Then I realised what it really was, and felt bad about the whole thing. The dolphin is pretty well done, really.

  3. nmf says:

    this is really cool!!

    and i have to say it, i wonder if he’s a jewfin…

  4. Vairi says:

This is a really great tattoo.

  5. Outback Jon says:

Considering the obvious penis tattoo possibility, I think this was a wonderful choice.

  6. linda says:

    Beautiful choice! Great execution.

    • Cleopatra says:

It is. Whoever inked this one did a wonderful job. I love the way the whole thing looks three-dimensional, not just the head. <3

  7. Cave says:

When life gives you lemons, don’t make lemonade. Make life take back the lemons back! Get mad!

  8. Boodie says:

    THAT is totally awesome!

  9. Kelly says:

thats pretty awesome actually. I am glad that he has come to grips with whatever tragic accident that he may have had. Also the dolphin looks great, so thumbs up to who ever did it.

  10. Sharlee says:

Very awesome idea and great work too.

  11. butterfly says:

The dolphin is well done, covers the scar well, this person is missing an arm. Why is this tattoo here?

    • Cleopatra says:

Because it’s interesting, unusual and makes a good topic for discussion. They can’t all be disembodied sex organs drawn by 12-year olds with St. Vitus’ Dance, or we’d all be too depressed to log on by now. Just think of Mr. Dolphin as a palate-cleanser. : )

    • surrealfarm says:

It’s here for comparison. We get to see a truly brilliant and unique tattoo for once. It makes all the others look that much worse.

This tat says so much for the person’s mental stability as well. He/she has come to grips with their disability and is having fun with it.

      Wild applause!!!!

    • 3BoyMom says:

I think ugliest tattoos needs Sunday Sweets, just like Cakewrecks- we need and deserve a palate cleanser here!

      • May says:

I’ve actually made a collection in my favorites of the tattoos on here that I really like.

      • zhoen says:

Agreed. I’ve suggested this before. We do get thrown a good one now and then, and we have to guess which ones *are* the good ones. Illuminates the kneejerk trolls.

  12. amanda says:

its snout is obviously what’s left of his humerus bone, so i imagine he can make it waggle its snout. That’s an amusing image, actually.

    • risskia says:

I was thinking the same thing. He’ll be able to waggle it for his kids and THEN his grandkids who will all think it’s the most AWESOMEST thing EVAR~

    • pnkroc says:

I wonder how bad it hurt to get this tattoo. I remember when I got my humerous tattooed, it was one of the worst parts of getting tattooed.

  13. ta2dman says:

Usually, I wince when the tattoo appears. This time, I cheered! Best tattoo on this site in memorable history (with some pretty right on hover text as well.

Awesome! The tattoo artist did a stunning job.

  14. lasondra says:

Why is this on here – i think it’s great!

  15. meh says:

am i the only one that noticed the nipple in the armpit

  16. red says:

Give this guy a hand! Well done! ;-P

  17. Ryan says:

    This is fantastic.

  18. Jane St.Clair says:

    This guy wins at life.

  19. Yolanda says:

So dolphins do attack! This one clearly ate this guy’s arm!

    • Cleopatra says:

I wonder if the “bottlenose” sticks straight out that way all the time, or if he’s just holding the little stump out for the photograph. Seems like he’d stub it on doorways, etc., a lot. :-( That would have to hurt.

    • Cinsavant? says:

Considering dolphins have been known to rape, i think i’d rather sacrifise an arm. But maybe that’s just me. http://emtoast.com/?p=1925

  20. Owl says:

This is awesome. Good for this guy. I wonder if he’s named it.

  21. Dude says:

    GANGSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR

  22. Christel says:

    Awesome tat. Love it.

  23. Jenn says:

When I scrolled over this, I actually heard in my head the sound bite a DJ at a radio station station plays when you win the daily prize. You know what I mean, canned appease and whistles and cheering. This guy wins the prize for being totally AWESOME! You, sir, win at life!

  24. Psychethos says:

Really awesome. I think if this was me, I would extend that dolphin all the way down the front of my torso.

  25. Kellie says:

This is AMAZING. I love it.

  26. Cinsavant? says:

I gotta wonder……would it be MORE or LESS painful for being on scar tissue like that? Anybody know?

    • Pinky says:

I was also wondering if the scar tissue will hold the ink like normal skin, or if it will fade faster or stay on longer.

    • It hurts about the same amount but it’s a different kind of pain, if that makes sense.

And it does seem to fade faster, at least on mine. The skin is less elastic and doesn’t hold the ink as well. I think that’s the scientific explanation, anyway.

    • Uzaya says:

I have a tattoo that partially covers scar tissue. It hurt slightly less, but around the same.

  27. Diana says:

    Actually that’s pretty bad ass….:)

  28. Guys… I hate to be “that person”, but I think it’s paint. Still a beautiful piece of art, though.

    • Emily says:

This looks like a tattoo. I can tell from the redness around the edges and from seeing quite a few tattoos in my time ;)

  29. hallie says:

This is officially the greatest tattoo I have EVER seen

  30. M. says:

I don’t know which is more awesome, this one or the shark one.

… No, brain, not “Tattooed amputee stump battle royale.”

    I am a horrible person. =/

  31. XXX says:

This is the MOST disgusting thing I’ve EVER seen!!!!!!!! *barf*

  32. Marcos says:

    I call him stumpy.

    • Rauss says:

Yeah, you’re an idiot. Likely 12 years old as well.

    • PlutoniumBoss says:

      “And suddenly the stump-dolphin’s cool?”

Yep, all of a sudden it’s cool. Y’need to go back to Cool School and study the Cool Rules some more.

    • tor2ga says:

While you reference some other dolphin tats, which are very ugly tats rendered by half-@ssed artists, this dolphin tat on this guys stump is very well executed and is a piece of art. The eye is gorgeous and the rest of the dolphin fits perfectly with his scars and abnormalities.

Please pull your head out of your nether regions and get back to school where you belong…cutting classes will mean you stay an imbecile.

      • Cleopatra says:

Butbutbut it’s a dolphin tattoo! Dolphin tattoos are bad! Only stupid-heads get dolphin tattoos! Eww! EWWW! All the cool kids say that dolphin tattoos are stoopid! Don’t you want to be like the cool kids? I sure do!

        Love, XXX

    • Cinsavant? says:

      Ugly

  33. Panda says:

    You’re an idiot.

  34. Thistle Dew says:

Does it bother your hearing to have that much air blowing around in your head?

  35. Tina Garthe says:

    Dude that’s awesome

  36. Dr. Techi says:

That guy is awesome! I would like to shake his… um… I would like to salute him.

  37. Battamus says:

Because this is not just a dolphin tattoo slapped on willy-nilly just for the sake of getting a tattoo. This tat obviously has some sort of purpose of being there, having been placed on a rather dolphin shaped stump. Maybe to cover the stump up or make it more aesthetically pleasing. Maybe just to make light of the situation. The exact reason cannot be said except for the receiver themselves.

Either way, this isn’t JUST a plain ol’ normal generic dolphin tattoo, it’s appropriate given the situation.

    • owl says:

You could make an ass-shaped tattoo in your face – would it be awesome, too? The tatt’s uggly there isn’t anything aesthetical at all…

  38. gregaaron89 says:

I wanna give this guy a high fi- oh…

  39. Snapshot says:

So, you didn’t read all the comments commending this guy for both his bravery in making light of this, and on how it’s a cool, well executed tattoo?

    • Thistle Dew says:

I hate that people don’t read the comments before adding their own. The first comment is “Best tattoo ever.” One troll hates all dolphin tattoos and suddenly we all are on the same bus to hell with him. I have my doubts Rachel really knows anything about the tattooed amputee. I think she’s just trying to make me uncomfortable on the bus ride.

  40. XJ says:

That is a really awesome concept! It looks so real. I just wish they had finished the dolphin, rather than letting it fade to nothing.

  41. jesusTheWhale says:

BEST thing i’ve ever seen! this guys got a good idea!

  42. Justin Chase says:

    Actually this one is awesome!

  43. ixixmmix says:

This tattoo isn’t bad, I saw it a while ago on “fyeahtattoos.com”

“A soldier lost his arm in battle while saving a little girls life and made the best of it.”

    http://fyeahtattoos.com/post/6327107866/a-soldier-lost-his-arm-in-battle-while-saving-a

    • Anna Rexia says:

I looked to see if I could find who the artist is and see more of their work and I call bullshit on the soldier story. I kept finding links saying the same thing about some soldier losing his arm in battle, yadda yadda, and it was all by some girl saying the guy is her cousin, but it points to some attention whore’s web site with nothing on the web site about the guy.

I did find a few hints that the guy with the tattoo is an amputee (duh hehe) and the artist’s name is Valio Ska. Valio has done work in a few countries, but his home base is Sofia, Bulgaria. Oddly, his MySpace pics and his shop do not show this picture, but a few amputee sites that have this picture credit him as the artist. Looking at some of his other work, it’s easy to believe that he is/could be the artist, as he has some absolutely fabulous work.

I need to get rich so I can tour Europe for some serious ink work.

      • vetchick says:

Why does it matter what happened? It is a great tattoo and a great statement no matter how the injury occurred.

  44. roo says:

awesome, lets just hope he doesn’t go to Japan .

  45. bettielee says:

I have a dolphin for an arm. YOUR ARGUMENT IS INVALID.

  46. Ugh says:

Very cool. It would be even better if the same tattoo was done on the backside of his shoulder-but in a way that you could only see one from each side-if that makes any sense

  47. N says:

    HIS HAND IS A DOLPHIN.

  48. hclark says:

    Very realistic art – nice

  49. icanhazlaughs says:

This one armed dolphin-nub man can challenge the one armed shark-nub man in an stumpy, sea life tattooed battle of awesomeness!!!

    This definitely belongs on BestTattoosEvar.PeopleWithAmazingHumor.com

  50. Me says:

Tbh, its original, cool and all but it sucks, I would never do that to body. I bet all the good reviews about this is because the dude is missing an arm ( I respect him because he has done nothing to make me not but this is really lame to me)

    • jill says:

It’s not because the man lost his arm that this is a marvelous tattoo. It’s also that the artist who made this is phenomenally good. The cooperation between these two people created something inspiring and aesthetic. Most everyone who commented said the same in his/her own words.

If you don’t like it, that’s how you see it. You have the right.

  51. Uzaya says:

Tattoos like this give me hope for humanity. It’s much needed after browsing this site too much.

  52. kytfox says:

XXX, I will explain this slowly. The guy lost his arm. That hurts like nothing you can ever imagine, and I don’t mean a one time hurt or just a body hurt. It is a mental pain as well. A lot of people get bitter & angry and turn away from people.
This guy is not turning away, He has the courage and the balls to take his stump, pretty it up, and stick it in your face!
I admire that man. My dad lost his leg in the Korean War, he took like this guy. Just went on every day, but I saw people at the hospital he went to who turned dead inside or angry at the world.
I choose this guys way. If you can’t see that you have a lot of growing up to do no matter what your age is.

  53. kytfox says:

Even If he had lost his arm in a car wreak in New York, this is still an awesome way to deal with it. It is reality for him so he’s making the best of it.

  54. tjgoldstein says:

I detest dolphins as a rule but even I have to admit that this particular tattoo, and the location of it, is pretty spectacular.

    • Cinsavant? says:

I dont detest dolphins….but I DO detest the “Dolphins are our superiors, dolphin’s are smarter than we are, dolphins are angels of the oceans” crowd…..but I do like this tattoo

      • Rauss says:

They procreate through rape, as do ducks.

Nature can be as horrible and as vindictive as humanity.

        • Robbie says:

Humanity is just part of nature.

Just the other day I was reading a quote from a behavioural neurologist who has spent the past several years studying dolphin intelligence. Her general conclusion was that — if you define intelligence as the ability to learn, remember, and solve problems — goldfish are brighter than dolphins.

  55. Shiny says:

What many people don’t realise is that he had the tattoo done before the amputation…

    • Cleopatra says:

Actually, what people don’t realize is that this is really a dolphin with a body shaped like a human torso.

  56. Andrea says:

i must say this is an AWESOME tattoo and well played… if life hands you lemons, use them to bean anybody who says you are wrong to express your creativity!

    • Rauss says:

When life hands you lemons, tattoo a beautiful lemon grove over a hideous disability or scar tissue and show the world that you don’t care how they treat you.

    • 04petesake says:

I always thought the saying was “when life hands you lemons, throw them at sluts”?

  57. Bebe says:

It’s a sad tired dolphin but beautifully done. It should be the whole dolphin body though, I think. Still nothing beats having your arm but this is truly making it the best of what he could do.

  58. Kat says:

just seconding (thirding? tenthing?) the “best tattoo ever” sentiment. this guy has the kind of guts and spirit I only wish I could muster when life smacks me around. good on you, sir!

  59. JuicyKitture says:

this is amazing! A lot of people probably like to hide their deformities, but thumbs up to this guy for embracing it!

  60. subterranean says:

Did reading through the comments make anyone else think of that episode of Simpsons Treehouse of Horror where the dolphins walk on land and attack humans? Now the tattoo is kind of scaring me.

  61. KatB says:

I don’t know if this was posted to be spiteful or if someone thought it really was ugly, but I saw this on Tumblr along with a breif story from the tattoo owners cousin. So here’s the story:

“A soldier lost his arm in battle while saving a little girls life and made the best of it.”

  62. goo go says:

I think it looks awesome and a very creative way to make use of a stump. The artist is very talented…unlike the countless others on this page…

  63. Andrizza says:

If it didn’t require this guy’s arm to be a stump, I would say that this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.

  64. hhm... says:

    my hand is a DOLPHIN!

  65. vetchick says:

Not sure why this is on this sight because it is an awesome tattoo and a great way to deal with an unfortunate injury. Thumb(s) up!

  66. happypie says:

    My hand is a dolphin!

  67. MrPendent says:

He should have made it a honey badger…

  68. Party Nathan says:

Best tatoo ever!!!!! Gotta love a guy who makes the best out of the worst, and this is truely beyond beautiful!

  69. Party Nathan says:

Also, the smartest tattoo I’ve ever seen.

  70. CarmenT says:

My husband is an amp (upper body as well), and the people who refuse to let others’ perceptions of them dictate their sense of self worth are the ones who do well. This guy rocks. :-)

  71. Raspy says:

Took me a second to realise what was going on, then I lol’d :)

I can only hope that if I get dealt a blow like that I’ll be able to make light of it and see the positive side.

  72. Jaybelle says:

Oh that is TOO disturbing. I’ll never be able to look a dolphin in the blow hole again.

  73. April says:

This is a soldier whose arm was blown off in Iraq. Way to be a douche.

  74. Tia says:

Not really ugly in my opinion. Beautifully done.

  75. Shlottie says:

When life gives you lemons you say “F*CK YOU” and squeeze lemon juice in its eyes.

    Awesome tatt

  76. megakippster says:

    AGH!!! AAAAAAGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

  77. Hmm says:

Maybe a shart took the arm – sharks leave dolphins alone, I’ve read somewhere.

  78. Snezzle says:

    WIN! Nice creative solution!

  79. NerdyMcNerdson says:

I love the tattoo, but I’m having a bit of trouble not making a Fullmetal Alchemist reference.
    Whoops, just did.

  80. Linda says:

Genius, beyond cool. Props to the artist and to the guy who got this tat. Great job.

  81. kc says:

upon first seeing this i thought it was a dislocated shoulder because that was the same angle mine wet out on when i had an unfortunate drunken accident involving whips (i wont divulge) but i just wanna say…FREAKIN AWESOME!!!! WHAT A SENSE OF HUMOUR THIS PERSON MUST HAVE!! we need more people like him in this world!!

  82. Kim says:

    This tat is awesome

  83. bolero The Darth Decent says:

Yay! In keeping with the trend of tattooing over physical weirdnesses. This is right up there with the person who tattooed a perforation line and scissors right above their missing toe.

  84. Natalie Sera says:

I LIKE it!! Great sense of humor, and it’s definitely unique. Great tattoo artist, and this one should definitely NOT be in the ugliest tattoos section!

  85. Tammy says:

I would never call this an “ugliest tattoo.” But if it hadn’t been put on this site, I would have never gotten to appreciate its beauty.

  86. tigs says:

I think the tattoo artist did an awesome job, I think the guy with the tat is just awesome. He is dealing with a horrible situation admirably. Now this is just too bad for words and makes all dolphons look bad
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/howaboutthat/5230467/No-Regrets-The-Best-Worst-and-Most-Ridiculous-Tattoos-Ever.html?image=17

  87. mimi says:

Whoever inked this should get a medal themselves. What a great way to deal with the inner pain of having lost a limb by creating such beautiful art on the outside to show it’s okay!

  88. Mantis says:

This is actually great work! And I’ve been browsing trough these pages for some time. Hands up for the tattoo artists, and also for the person getting this tattoo.. What a great way to make something beautifull out of an “ugly” situation

  89. Justin Thyme says:

It was either this, or W.C. Fields.

  90. e says:

i haven’t seen anything as disturbing as this.

  91. madhouse says:

I actually heard the story behind this guy’s missing arm. It got blown off when he was rescuing a little girl.. I think.. could have been someone else. but im pretty sure this guy was in an article or on cnn or something cause of it. idk, don’t quote me on it.

  92. Newcastle says:

    That’s just plain excellent work.
