Today Is Such A Fantastic Day

Funny Tattoos - BobRossInk Spotter: JD

Okay, now we’re just going to load up our gun with some of this Phthalo blue, and just tap-tap-tap it into my calf there. Juuust take and pull it to the sides, right in the background there. That’s a nice color, isn’t it? Now then, we’re going to take our liner gun, dip it into the paint-thinner, and load it up with some titanium white. Just pure white. And now we’re going to just put a few lines in my beard there for highlight, just like so. Just wherever you feel they should go. Wherever they want to hang out. There we go. Happy little beard.

  1. PsychoJenic says:

    Ok, points for the good colour portrait, but minus a million for taste, yeah? Unless he was your Dad. Then maybe…

  2. candace says:

    whaaaaa? seriously, Bob Ross? My only critique on the portrait, is that I’m not sure the hair is large enough…

  3. Sabrina says:

    OMG I almost passed out due to lack of oxygen from the laughing/coughing fit that just gave me.

  4. micha says:

    i used to watch his show when i was stoned. nothing more hypnotizing.

  5. Colleen says:

    we can and should all admit that it’s at least an excellent likeness…

  6. Evan says:

    Wow, what an amazing portrait!

    I used to watch Bob paint often, he was so talented.

    With all of the detail in the portrait this must have taken many hours to complete!

    Long live Bob Ross!

  7. Austin says:

    Yeah, y’know, I actually really like this tattoo. I know it got “voted in” and all, but I can’t help but think that this is still pretty far from an ugly tattoo.

  8. Malisyn says:

    Yeah, great job on that tattoo. But Bob Ross…who’s on the other side, Martha Stewart?

    @Evan
    Maybe you already knew, but for the benefit of people that may not know already, Bob Ross is dead.

  9. Oni says:

    This really is a fantastic piece of art. It’s a great looking tattoo that you can tell was not picked off of a wall, and really has some thought behind it, not to mention a fantastic artist to ink it.

    But really? Bob Ross? I mean, he was a cool guy who made very average art, but really?

  10. NoAdditives says:

    Awesome.

    @Malisyn
    That’s why Evan said “Long live”. Like they used to do with kings. “The king is dead. Long live the king.” That’s how it’s done.

    • spandangly says:

      Late to this party, but I just have to point out that that is not what the phrase means. The second half is in reference to the NEW king, so this phrase encompasses the transition of sovereignty from one monarch to another. I’m pretty sure even Wikipedia will tell you that.

      Secondly, I’m still down with Evan using it (unrelated to “the king is dead”) as an implied, “in our hearts and minds.” ‘Cause Bob Ross was a fantastic man.

    • Baldy says:

      “The king is dead, long live the King” wasn’t an homage to the deceased king, so much as a gesture to the new king who succeeded the deceased.

      But I know what you’re saying.

  11. Jagger says:

    I agree with the first post. Fantastic artwork, but no points for taste. There are a thousand other artists out there this person could have tattooed on themselves, but they had to chose the one who smoked the most pot? And had the worst white man fro ever?

  12. Johnny Jackass says:

    Fucking badass!!!

  13. Charlene says:

    Never mind the content of the tat: that’s one talented tattoo artist.

  14. Picky Snickerson says:

    I have to agree with everyone above: that’s some serious ink skills there. Let’s all just be thankful it isn’t Bob Ross jerking off, shitting strawberries or riding a unicorn. (Now that I’ve typed that, I have a horrible feeling someone will create a tattoo with all those things on it. Shit.)

  15. enamy says:

    ya’ll are trippin. that’s an awesome tattoo.

    although i think it was meant to be looked at with tongue firmly planted in cheek, the man did radiate positivity. we should all be so blessed.

  16. skance says:

    BEST. COMMENTARY. EVER. Hilarious! And, I didn’t know Bob Ross kicked it, so my tears of joy were tinged with tears of sadness by the end.

  17. Shaylee says:

    I think this is awesome!

  18. Shaylee says:

    I think this is a really great portrait! I can’t help but smile when I see Bob Ross.

  19. jm says:

    A lot of artists were inspired by Bob Ross as kids. I mean, they tended to be shitty artists, but the tribute to the late Bob Ross isn’t that bad. At least the portrait was done well.

  20. Lady Ice says:

    This is so full of win I think my head might explode. I need to wash my Bob Ross t-shirt and wear it today in honor of this awesome tattoo.

    Useless Bob Ross fact – it is very difficult, if not impossible to own a Bob Ross painting, as he did not want his work used to generate profit, but rather to inspire average people to try painting. I’d give a source, but I can’t remember where I read it. Check out bobross.com to buy Bob Ross crap! YEAH!

  21. lpanne says:

    who’s protrait can you tatoo on yourself and not look like an idoit?

  22. S. says:

    I think this is a very lovely tattoo.

  23. bizini says:

    one million points for the picture “description”!!
    i LOLed my ass off

  24. Jerra says:

    Bob Ross FTW!!!!

  25. Anna Rexia says:

    @Picky Snickerson
    This is one of the best colour portrait tattoos I’ve ever seen, and I agree with your comments. I remember years ago, when the online bodmod community was primarily on Usenet (and BME was small and completely FREE). There was almost always a discussion about “Taz” tattoos. The running joke was about someone getting a Taz, upside down, nailed to a cross, and on a surfboard. It wasn’t long before someone had that inked on their skin. So yeah, it’s only a matter of time until there are pictures of a tattoo going around of Bob Ross tossing off while riding a unicorn that’s crapping rainbow fruit. There must be some internet rule about this.

    @bizini
    When I first saw it, I thought “oh great, a really lengthy explanation and reference to ‘happy trees’” but read it and laughed. Best comment by a site owner/manager I’ve seen lately!

  26. Kittikins says:

    @candace
    Agreed. That ‘fro is too damn small.

  27. Kittikins says:

    I have a very strong urge to go to youtube and watch some Bob Ross videos. And I’m not even stoned. Drunk, but not stoned.

  28. tyedye says:

    The only thing missing is happy little trees. The really funny thing is, that the blogger worded things in such a way, you KNOW he has watched Bob Ross. :)

  29. Jessica says:

    @Kittikins
    Take it from this drunk: there are very few Bob Ross videos on youtube. But don’t worry, you can buy his entire DVD collection for a mere $1400.

  30. LadyKitsune says:

    That tat needs some happy little trees and a squirrel. Bob Ross was awesome!

  31. JD says:

    Sweet. Picture a posted is on the front page. Happy Trees!!

  32. Tracy Fletcher says:

    Ha, my husband & I used to watch him (the days before we had satellite)! He was definitely mesmerizing, but I agree, the hair is not big enough!

  33. Somrune says:

    This isn’t a bad tattoo at all. Bob Ross is a god of painting.

  34. Anon says:

    OK,I personally would never get that tat, but I have to say the artist who drew it is very talented. It’s a very realistic likeness of him.

  35. eeee says:

    @NoAdditives
    I hate to nitpick, but the reason it was “The king is dead; long live the king” was because the new king became king the moment the old king took his last breath. So the expression meant “The (old) king (Bob Ross the First) is dead; long live the (new) king (Bob Ross the Second).”

    And the reason I really hate to nitpick is because this is possibly the best entry I’ve ever seen on this site, ever. Not for the tattoo – the tattoo itself is, as others have mentioned, really well done (although I wonder if Bob’s eyebrow-knitting is covering up a scar. That area looks a little… odd). What makes this my favorite is the commentary, the beautiful perfect last three lines of the commentary.

    I’m going to close my browser now, because nothing else I see today can possibly be any better than this.

    • spandangly says:

      Sorry I hadn’t read all the way down before I said the same thing.

      Also, you saw the same thing I saw–except I see that little space between his eyebrows as butt cheeks–possibly from a different tattoo that the tattooee changed their mind about. And I CAN’T. STOP. SEEING IT.

      Anywho, Bob Ross rocks.

  36. roughpaws says:

    I really have to concede, this is, artistically speaking, a good portrait.
    However, there really is no accounting for taste.

    Maybe this is just recession trauma, right, folks?

    “My stocks have tanked… I’m going to invest in something I can appreciate forever!”

  37. southerngirl says:

    @tyedye

    the blogger/commenter’s name is usually listed at the bottom left of the pictures. in this case it is “jessica”, not a guy. and her commentary is usually the funniest =)

  38. Jon says:

    Truly the most epic description of any tattoo on this site. I want to say something funny and whimsical here, but I am too humbled. Well played … well played.

  39. Heather says:

    That’s a fucking good portrait!

  40. What the... says:

    Nice tat, don’t know who his is though.

  41. Brittany Gale says:

    Actually I would totally get Bob Ross tattooed on me. That’s fucking awesome.

  42. thirstybrit says:

    @NoAdditives
    Actually the expression, “The king is dead, long live the King,” could easily be, “The king is dead, long live the Queen.” It is not said in honor of the passing monarch, as some may think, but it is instead an exclamation of allegiance to the new monarch upon their accession, which occurs immediately the deceased monarch kicks the bucket. Interesting, eh? :D

  43. Spencer says:

    Two words: Epic Win.

  44. Jonny Flash says:

    “We don’t make mistake, just happy little accidents”

  45. Gina says:

    What a great depiction.. Brilliant… and at least..it wasn’t of him painting a happy little bush…cuz you know where someone would take that..

  46. anony mouse says:

    @eeee

    You, sir, are my interwebz hero of today. (apart from the fact you beat my carefully worded attempt at pedantry composed before scrolling down to read your post :o p )

  47. eeee says:

    @anony mouse
    Thanks! Glad to be of service. But to be honest, I am more of a heroine. (c:

    (And actually I borkd my own post – twice. So I shall now nitpick myself: It should say “the moment the old king breathed his last”, because of course he’d still be alive when he *took* that last breath; and it should say the last FOUR sentences of the post are purest genius etc…)

  48. Tattoo Kits says:

    I would never dream of getting a tattoo of him but I got to say its nicely done!

  49. HF_Buick says:

    ok where the hell is my alizarin crimson?!?

  50. Stephanie says:

    I must concur…probably the. best. commentary. ever. The commentary is the only reason I arrived at the point of visiting this site daily. Nothing will top this, ever.

    I also agree that it truly is an amazing ink job, whether you’re a Bob Ross fan or not. I want to know who/where that artist is, because I’m going to him from now on!

  51. Kittikins says:

    @Jessica
    I just may have to invest in that.

  52. Artfish23 says:

    WHAT?! This is most definately not ugly. More like awesome!

    Bob Ross is a personal artistic hero of mine. I’d be honored to add him to my dozen other tattoos (and probably will someday).

  53. bosh says:

    i thought it was Matthew Kelly lol

  54. noodlelube says:

    @eeee
    Sweet jesus. I’m so glad someone else pointed out the “knitted brows”! I was wondering why nobody else noticed. It IS an incredible portrait of a real tight whimsical guy…but what in the hell is going on between those brows?? They’re like mini boobs? Are they symmetrical hives or something, or was that actually tattooed on? Inquiring minds…

  55. Margaret says:

    not the best subject to have as a tat, but it’s very well-done, I’ll admit!

  56. KRiSTEN says:

    This was done by Shane O’Neil. http://www.shaneoneilltattoos.com/
    His portraits are excellent.

  57. Jessica says:

    OK so this definitely takes the cake for best portrait tattoo from Judge Judy.

  58. Heywood Jablomie says:

    Yeah, wrong blog for this tattoo. This is an amazing portrait. Fucking totally stupid, but not ‘ugly’. Thanks to the other poster for the like, I want to check out this guy’s other work. This is superb.

  59. JimmyRocks says:

    Remember, pretend that you’re a whisper floating across the canvas. Or calf, whatever.

  60. modchen says:

    yeah, bad call on this. #1, bob ross is awesome. #2, this is a great portrait.

    this is the fourth bob ross i’ve seen and the second best, by a very narrow margin, and i worked in the tattoo industry a good long while before i became a tech worker.

    all sorts of precious, but no cigar.

  61. Meredith says:

    You have to admit it’s beautifully executed though!

  62. Nim says:

    That one was pretty awesome actually OwO

  63. The Doctor says:

    Even after 25 years of tattooing, it still amazes me when I show my portfolio to a prospective client, who then proceeds to make faces and negative comments about individual works which don’t meet their personal aesthetic. I now preface the presentation with the idea that, not only will they find things THEY don’t like, but things I don’t particularly care for, either. The portfolio is to illustrate my capability to execute what they want, as well. My point here is, those who have disparaged the owner of this piece for his/her selection must either be not tattooed, or another idiotic “fringe” like the imbeciles who walk up to me every day like they’ve known me all my life because “they have a tattoo, too.” The Bob Ross portrait here is a world-class piece that should be admired for its’ artistic merit, not some perception of inadvisability due to personal taste in the subject matter.

    (folds up soapbox and puts away for later)

  64. Lissa Jo says:

    Awesome all around. Love Bob Ross. Excellent tattoo.

  65. Carlisle says:

    Everything about this is yes.

  66. Kittymouth says:

    I love Bob Ross as well, and I LOVED the commentary to this. Brought back some memories.
    It’s sort of sad that this is, and likely always will be the BEST executed tattoo on this entire site. But then, this isn’t prettiesttattoos.com now is it? XD

  67. T.J. says:

    This is my tattoo and I really would love to know how it ended up on here. I could give a shit less about the haters on here, its my leg, I’ll do with it as I see fit. Thanks to the complimenters.

  68. Daphne3620 says:

    Only thing that would possibly make it better .. some happy little trees!

    Love Bob Ross .. miss him terribly.

  69. The Chinditz says:

    Congrats T.J.

    Kimberly :)

  73. K.Star says:

    Fantastic commentary! Well executed tat.

  74. kate says:

    i use this guy’s gray gesso for my oil paintings. he makes good gesso, so why not commemorate him with an indelible skin portrait?

  75. Alex says:

    This is freaking awesome! “Happy little beard” LOL
    I used to watch that guy. Is he still alive?

  76. Tina says:

  79. [...] cute. But we’ve seen better. Incorrect source or offensive?celebs, I see dead people, [...]

  80. IDream says:

    Not a bad tattoo! I remember when this used to be on TV, I wanna say PBS at some point.

  81. theo says:

    thank you… i thought i was the only one totally annoyed that he called a machine a gun. of course i’m one of those people that get annoyed when you call plugs gauges.

  82. Yo says:

    Fu*kin WIN.

  83. MLT says:

    This is the best portrait tat I’ve seen on this site… And I am a huge fan of Bob Ross… I actually can’t find fault with this one… Not for everyone, granted… but it’s not a bad piece of ink…

  84. izzy says:

    I absolutely HATE portrait tattoos, but even I have to admit this is well done

  85. Mr.GGinCentralCali says:

    wow.. FANTASTIC artwork! Portraits are extremely difficult to get right, and this guy nailed it!

  86. Amorphis says:

    Yeah, there are some ugly tattoos out there, but I don’t think this is one of them. Very nicely done!
